Week 9+10

 Hello Geckos!

We have been working so hard in third grade that I forgot to take any pictures during week 9! Here is what we've been up to!

In math we are working on using a new strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems within 100, the tape diagram! We have been practicing the subtraction way for a couple of weeks and have gotten so strong using it. When I introduced the addition way, it barely took any time for them to understand how to manipulate the numbers. They use what they know about number bonds to ten, plus greater than, less than knowledge to create "friendly ten" equations.

In literacy we are focusing on strategies for understanding stories such as character and setting, and sequencing. We have read several stories around trading and learned how bartering through out history as evolved to using money to purchase goods. We have talked a lot about value as well.

We have completed our Force and Motion science unit and have switched our focus to studying the state of Vermont. We have learned many facts and watched some fun videos, even a rap song which I have posted here. Ask your student what they love about living in Vermont, and that is what they should use to create their "Vermonster!"

All is going well in THIRD Grade! So far we are just continuing to get to know each other, as well as the rules and routines of the classroom. We are doing everything we can to be safe with one another, respectful of people's feelings and responsible for ourselves. Week 8

 Happy November! I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween this weekend. A few reminders for you; if you need any winter gear (for anyone in the family) please let me know so I can help you with this. I have also asked that you sign up for a Parent/Teacher conference via zoom this year! Happening on Friday and next Monday. Students will be dismissed at 11:30. I sent a sign up sheet to you via email and via your students back. Please let me know a time that will work for you. Last week's pictures: We are continuing to strengthen our knowledge of place value, using different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Here the students are playing games during their "get to" time. When they finish their work for the day, they have a list of choices that they can pick from. Hello Families!  I’m testing out a new way to keep you in the loop. My blog!  Our current science and literacy theme has us studying landforms. I asked the kids to build an island out of salt dough. They had to include three high land forms and three bodies of water. They had to make it look realistic. Here, they are using realistic colors to paint their islands! Every Tuesday for STEAM, we have a building challenge. Last week, we our challenge was to design and build a haunted house.  This last group of pictures is of students modeling how erosion makes rocks break down over time and can end up as pebbles on a beach!
